Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Weekend Course
For Treatment of Victims of Crime, War, Accident, Rape, Abuse
The course aims to provide participants with practical trauma treatment strategies and techniques. The post traumatic stress psychotherapies practised will be on the whole: Psychodrama, Cognitive Therapy, Behaviour Therapy, and Art Therapy. There will also be practice in educational and narrative interventions. Creating standards of safety for treatment is a major theme. The majority of the time will be spent in experiential work and skills acquisition. Therefore, participants will be provided or directed to research that is important to the detection, diagnosis and treatment of trauma. The EMDR method will be introduced.
Interactive trauma themes including complex PTSD will be presented for discussion and practice. These include the impact of shame and guilt, physical injury, prior childhood trauma or abuse, family of origin impasse, personality factors, “recovery-readiness”, loss-grief, disguised trauma symptoms, alienation, powerlessness, fear and anger.
It is also anticipated that course members will have the opportunity to expand their present skills base within a trauma treatment context. The therapist roles and relationship building skills will be paramount in this process.
